The Medina Basketball Classic was action-packed the entire weekend of May 17 – 19, especially the girls divisions which were played mostly at the Cloverleaf Rec Center. One of the most exciting teams in the event was the 8th grade WPA Bruins Black team coaches by Louis Waller. Coach Waller’s team had speed and athleticism along with several players that could play multiple positions. They started off hot on Saturday beating ORS 35 – 8. They continued their onslaught by flawlessly executing their game plan against the Ohio Lakers, to the tune of a 36 – 12 victory.
But Sunday morning was a different story as the SMAC Family team, coached by Ryan Peabody, gave the WPA Bruins the best game of the tournament. The Bruins gave a great effort, but SMAC Family was not going to be detoured from winning that game.
Although the Bruins lost 53 – 46 to SMAC Family, they didn’t let that one setback keep from their ultimate mission of winning the 8th grade bracket. After a 46 – 5 semi-final win over North Coast Showtime and a very competitive 44 – 39 championship game victory over the Ohio Lakers, the were able to secure the 8th grade championship as they made their way back home to Pennsylvania. Keep your eye on this team folks. Those young ladies have a VERY bright future ahead of them as they prepare for their first year of high school. Best wishes to Coach Waller and his champion WPA Bruins Black team!!
